Lab Mentorship & Supervision Tool Box

In April 2023, Dr. Susanne Jaeggi and I presented effective and intentional mentoring strategies for undergraduate research assistants at the 2023 Western Psychological Association Convention. To make the information and tool accessible, we put together a “toolbox” document with examples and templates of what those mentoring strategies look like. Some of these contents have been shared on other social media outlets (e.g. Weibo) and on this site. But in the spirit of open science and accessible resources, here is a copy of the full document!

This resource packet includes all the examples shared at the “How to Mentor, Teach, and Guide Students in Research?” session on April 27th, 2023 at the Western Psychological Association Convention (Riverside, CA). The purpose of these resources is to provide references and examples to foster student learning and help community members further improve their mentorship skills. In September 2023, I left my lab manager position to pursue my Ph.D. journey. To train new lab staff (and perhaps an old habit from my student affairs days), I created a “Supervision 101 - Lab Manager Edition” and hosted two training sessions. I’ve learned a lot about supervision from my previous experiences working in residential education and student life, where we were constantly talking about and reflecting on how to be an empathetic mentor, an effective supervisor, and a developmental role model for our students. Here is a copy of the manual for those who are looking for resources on lab management and supervision!

The purpose of this document is to provide descriptions and examples of effective and empathic RA supervision. There are no “perfect” supervisors because being a supervisor is an underdeveloped and ongoing process, so rather than a manual, this document aims to provide suggestions and tools that could be helpful for your growth as a manager.
